DEFG gave a presentation on prepaid energy service on July 12, 2015 to NARUC’s Committee on Consumer Affairs. DEFG managing partner Nat Treadway challenged the conventional notion that electricity is more like a commodity (like gasoline) that a service (with the complexity of many end use devices in the home). He used grocery shopping as an example to ask, “does today’s approach to utility billing make sense for people on a budget?”

Prepayment creates a new transaction, and there are opportunities for new consumer behaviors, improved household budget management, more control and greater convenience.
